About ERSCP & EMSU

The European Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production is a non-profit forum that provides a platform to stimulate, develop and disseminate new initiatives aimed at fostering the implementation of concepts involving sustainable consumption and production and approaches within local and regional sustainable development initiatives.

Environmental Management for Sustainable Universities has evolved into a series of international conferences that explore the role of universities in creating new knowledge and attitudes to meet today’s environmental challenges. EMSU promotes a two way exchange of knowledge between universities and society.

Next to participation in the conference you also have the opportunity to participate in an excursion that is in line with the conference themes. Thus you can actually experience how sustainability is translated into reality.

Note: The excursions are offered at an additional fee of € 75; transport, lunch and entry fees are included. All excursions require a minimum number of fifteen participants. In case of insufficient participants you will be asked to choose one of the other excursions or excursions can be cancelled. In that case you will be refunded at the registration in Delft.

Excursion 1: Wind energy
Holland comes to mind first as the windmill country par excellence.
Windmills have always played a great part in the life of its inhabitants. Initially windmills served to grind corn, to remove excess water from the low-lying districts and to saw timber. Windmills and clogs (wooden shoes) are still considered tourist attractions. “Zaanse Schans” and “Kinderdijk” are two examples of popular windmill locations for tourists and the Dutch themselves.
Although quite some old windmills are still operational, large high-tech wind turbines have taken over for the production of electricity, not only on-land but also offshore in the North Sea.

This excursion will take you to the very old wind mills in Kinderdijk and also includes a visit to a modern wind turbine. As an extra there is a cruise-tour of the Rotterdam harbours.
Maximum number of participants: 24

Excursion 2: Holland the country of flowers
The Dutch song “Tulips from Amsterdam” is known all over the world. So are the picture postcards of the Dutch bulb-fields in spring. However, nowadays most flowers are grown in large greenhouses that need lots of energy for lighting and heating. Here too sustainable innovation is a hot issue.
This excursion will take you to a very sustainable orchid-cultivator and one of the largest flower auctions in the world in Naaldwijk. As an extra there is a cruise-tour of the Rotterdam harbours. Maximum number of participants: 48

Excursion 3: Holland and Water

After the dramatic floods in 1953 the Dutch Government decided that the safety of the Netherlands had to be permanently guaranteed at times of storms and high sea levels. The solution was found in the “Delta Works”, a series of dikes, storm surge and flood barriers constructed not only for protection, but also for the production of sweet water for agriculture. Simultaneously, nature conservation and the conservation of mussel and oyster cultures were incorporated.

This excursion will take you to the “Delta Works” – “Neeltje Jans” and “The Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier” - and the lowest point in The Netherlands, 6.76 meters below sea-level.
Maximum number of participants: 48

Excursion 4: Holland and sustainable housing
Sustainable innovation in housing and urban renewal is also a hot issue in The Netherlands.
The standards for energy saving, CO2 emission-reduction, etc. increase continuously and so does the related regulations. Technical innovation in building and construction respond to new demands and requirements.

This excursion will take you to the “thermic sea-water power station” (providing heating to 800 houses) in Scheveningen/The Hague, and to “SnowWorld” in Zoetermeer. As an extra there is a visit to “Madurodam”, the smallest city in The Netherlands.
Maximum number of participants: 48
